By 1994, Brendan Loughlin had lost it all. His mother, his family,
even a place to live. The 53 year-old former housepainter counted on
the Guilford Food Bank and the goodwill of the people at St. George's
Church to survive. It was during this time that Loughlin took his
first step toward his new vocation. Loughlin discover MaryLou Fischer
Gallery and requested that she review his art. In 2000, MaryLou
Fischer decided to represent Loughlin as an emerging artist. The rest
is history. He discovered PASTAC quite by accident. During a trip to
Canada, he experimented with pastels. But Brendan never liked the
fixative artists typically used to set pastels' colors to canvas. The
fixative changes the color of the paints. Because I was in the
refinishing business, I knew what shellac could do for wood; it
brings out pure color and locks it in. I bought a little can of
shellac, sprayed it on the pastels, and I got just beautiful, pure color.
