Erik Sundgaard

Erik Sundgaard was born in 1949 in New Haven, CT. His family encouraged artistic activity as an uncle graduated from Yale School of Art and a cousin from the University of Hartford with a master’s degree in fine arts. As a result, when he entered Paier School of Art his abilities were well developed. Three renowned teachers under whom he studied were Rudolf Zallinger, Ken Davies and Paul Lipp. National recognition quickly followed when one of his paintings appeared on the cover of Yankee magazine, a New England publication with national subscribers, and Prevention magazine featured one of his landscapes on its cover. Since then, magazines and publishers as diverse as Field & Stream, Parents, Sail, Motorboat, St. Martin's Press and The Boston Globe have commissioned artwork from Mr. Sundgaard as have many corporations including GE, 3M, Aetna Life & Casualty, Shell Oil Company, Textron, and Stanley Tools, In 1985, The Houston Parks Board selected him to do a representational painting of Sam Houston Park that was unveiled by the city's mayor, Kathy Whitmire, at a special ceremony. Over the years, Erik has received recognition from peers as his illustrations were exhibited in New York in shows 17 and 18 of The Society of Illustrators and Two Hundred Years of American Illustration. In the latter show, which included such greats as Winslow Homer, Norman Rockwell, and J.C.Leyendecker, Erik was among the youngest artists accepted. At age twenty four he authored a book entitled The Human Figure, now published by John Wiley and Sons, which consisted of over 600 photographs of 17 models. It is a photographic reference of anatomy for artists. Fine art publications that have shown Erik’s paintings include The Artist’s Magazine (April 1998) and International Artist (editions 15 and 18). Today his art is focused around painting as he no longer illustrates nor does graphic design work. Galleries which have sold his work are located in Texas, Vermont, New York, Maryland and Connecticut. Hi education includes a diploma from Paier School of Art, BFA and BA degrees from Albertus Magnus College and a MS degree from the University of New Haven.
